Iron ore is a rock or mineral from which iron can be extracted. It is used to make pig iron, which is one of the main materials for the production of iron: 98% of the iron ore used in the production of iron. Ore deposits are mainly distributed into four categories: Massive Hematite, Magnetite, Titanomagnetite, Pisoltic Iron Stone. The content of iron varies depending on the type of metal. Hematite typically contains 60-70% iron, magnetite typically contains 65-75% iron, and titanomagnetite typically contains 50-65% iron. Pisolitic ironstone usually contains 40-50% iron.

The most common mineral found in Nigeria is hematite. Hematite is a reddish-brown iron oxide mineral with the chemical formula Fe2O3. Hematite ores in Nigeria usually contain between 50% and 70% iron, making them ideal for iron ore production. Nigeria has the 10th largest copper reserves in the world, with reserves estimated at 2.7 billion tons.

It is expected that the demand for steel throughout the world will grow in the coming years. This is due to the increasing use of steel, which is used in various products, such as cars, appliances, and houses. According to a report by the World Steel Association, global steel production is expected to reach 1.8 billion tons in 2025, from 1.6 billion tons in 2020. This increase in steel production will increase demand for iron ore. The global iron market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 4.5% between 2022 and 2027.
